Don't
think of Compaq as a computer maker anymore. The PC maker is getting
into fun gizmos and one of it inaugural offerings is a doozy.
The Compaq iPaq H3600 Pocket PC handheld device is one of the swankiest
devices in the Microsoft-powered hand-held universe, which also includes
the Casio Cassiopeia Pocket PC ($900) and the HP Jornada Pocket PCs
($750). The $700 Compaq device is a stylus-driven, 6.8-ounce brushed
silver unit with a screen of similar quality to that of a color notebook.
A one-touch digital sound recorder and 32 megabytes (MB) of memory are
built in and the device can play and record sound. It runs a portable
version of Word, Excel and provides all the Outlook functions, plus
it contains a digital book reader.
Unlike its competitors, it uses a slip-on sleeve, called a sled, to
use add-on memory or accessory cards. The screen is bright and crisp
and has multiple settings for a variety of light conditions.
Too bad about the buttons on this gadget. The silk-screen icons on them
were already starting to rub off when I got my hands on a demo unit.
Sexy: yes. Durable: Perhaps not.
Price: $499 US / $700 CDN
