V-Com AutoSave

By Lowell Conn, Cyberwalker Media Syndicate

There are two opposing areas in which file utilities ultimately lie. They can be overwhelmingly complex, featuring a multitude of options you'll never need or figure out how to use, or they are simple, concise and consisting of all the options an average user would like to have.

AutoSave, a file backup utility by V Communications, thankfully falls into the latter group.

This is a program that raises the standards bar for every file backup utility to come. AutoSave does not believe its users should fend for themselves; every step of the backup process is conducted through a wizard that provides the ultimate user-friendly experience for small business owners.

Take heed: this program does not assume its users to be complete neophytes. But the wizards are helpful to newcomers while still allowing slick and quick access for veterans.

Slick and quick does not even begin to describe how easily this program is utilized. Load it up and the screen immediately offers the main functions of the program, includingn the two most important: backup and restore. Click on one of these options and within seconds you will be operating.

With some backup programs, the process for defining specific files to back up can be difficult and counter-intuitive. AutoSave is the opposite. Read the instructions on screen, follow the advice and you're off. Users can be filtering files to back up within moments.

If anything denies this program a perfect score, it is the necessity of running through the wizards every time you back up your hard drive or key files. This creates a surplus of pages to manipulate. Despite that surplus, AutoSave is just as quick as other back-up programs that allow users to perform their operations through one screen.

Also, a serious oversight: programmers at V Communications neglected to include a timed back-up option that allows users to back up files periodically as they work. Timed backups are standard on many other programs on the market.

But if your needs do not fall into this area and you are looking for an option that backs up the files when you need it and with unsurpassed convenience, AutoSave is a good program for small business backups.

Reviewer's rating: 4 / 5

Comments: Would rate higher, but needs a timed backup feature.
