Communique Laboratory's Communicate! Pro v2.0
By Lowell Conn, Cyberwalker
Media Syndicate
Communicate!
Pro is a very comprehensive piece of software. Its voice mail
component will give your small business the appearance of big
business.
Its many functions -- including fax, Internet, telephone answering,
paging, not to mention conversation recording -- make it an
ideal utility for small business people and a wide array of
professionals (journalists come to mind).
This program will save you money, allaying the cost of voice
mail, a fax machine, and maybe even a secretary.
Off the bat, this is one great-looking program. Its interface
resembles a multi-faceted phone, with nicely laid out options
and buttons at your disposal. With everything cleanly laid out,
you'd think this program is as simple to use as your home phone,
right?
Unfortunately, no. Communicate! Pro is somewhat sluggish and
not the easiest piece of software to master. The overwhelming
number of options actually hinders the program.
The potential advantage to this type of software should be twofold:
cost and convenience. The cost associated with turning your
computer into an all-purpose fax, voice mail and Internet vehicle
will undoubtedly add savings to your operation but the difficulty
of use might adversely balance the benefit.
This reviewer -- who found the original Communicate! program
to be simple and incredibly convenient -- had no problem navigating
more complex options such as batch faxing but found a seemingly
simple operation such as conducting an outbound voice phone
call a chore.
Sure, the manual fills in the knowledge gap, but at 250 pages,
what small business owner will have the time to seriously study
this tome?
That the program is constantly reinitializing the computer modem
also seems redundant and inconvenient. Picking up your phone
and manually dialing will save you more time and miles of frustration.
Still, Communicate! Pro is by no means a washout.
The all-encompassing nature of this program merits a look. Peripheral
phone options such as recording calls, sending recorded messages,
distinctive phone rings and Internet phone capabilities are
impressive.
Also, one telephone line can be rigged with multiple voice mails
providing the illusion of a big bureaucratic organization for
even the smallest of small businesses.
In the end, you are trading ease-of-use for a multitude of options.
If you're not afraid of a challenge, are not averse to consulting
a program's manual sporadically and if online fax, voice mail
and Internet options will save you time or money, this program
should get the nod. If you want simplicity in your communication,
it could be beneficial to wait for Communicate! Pro's next installment,
however.
Reviewer's rating: 3.5 / 5
Comments: Expansive, comprehensive, this program has
it all -- except real simplistic ease-of-use.
Price: Between $120 US, $180 Canadian
