Connect One's Fax Messenger
is an adjunct to your fax machine that converts paper documents
into e-mail attachments that can be read by any personal computer.
It then sends them to single e-mail address or group of addresses.
It's a great idea.
Using a PC workstation as the primary method of receiving a regular
volume of faxes can be a nightmare. Windows was not built with
fax receiving in mind. It performs this function unreliably and
causes PCs to crash on a regular basis if it is being used to
perform any other function at the same time.
Conversely, sending a fax directly from a PC desktop has always
made a lot of sense because it is more efficient than printing
a document in order to fax it. Most businesses will end up buying
a fax machine for receiving faxes and using fax software to send
faxes directly from the desktop.
Unfortunately, paper faxes can't be electronically filed or redistributed
without the time-consuming use of a scanner. This is an increasingly
common problem for any business that prefers to use e-mail as
its primary method of communication.
This is where Fax Messenger, a unit the size of a large palm device
with a small QWERTY keyboard, a few function keys and a LCD screen,
can help. It allows you to receive and send faxes electronically
without involving a computer.
Physical setup is simple: just plug your phone line into Fax Messenger
and then plug another phone cord from Fax Messenger into your
fax machine.
It's also easy to use. To create an electronic version of a paper
document, you press "Send" and select the destination address
or group of addresses from a list on Fax Messenger. When prompted
by Fax Messenger, insert the document into the fax machine and
use the fax machine to dial "1."
Fax Messenger receives the fax, uses the phone line to dial into
an Internet service provider and sends the e-mail attachment to
the e-mail address or group of addresses that you specified.
Once the e-mail is sent, Fax Messenger returns to stand-by mode
and clears its memory. It will not save anything. If you want
to save electronic versions of files sent to others, however,
just add your e-mail address to the group to which the e-mail
fax is sent.
Once Fax Messenger is configured, it works quite reliably. Configuration,
however, is not simple. It is challenging for the average computer
user to set up Fax Messenger and get it working with an Internet
service provider (ISP) for the first time. The interface is not
user friendly and accompanying documentation doesn't point out
interface bugs. To eliminate these set-up problems, Connect One
will be selling Fax Messenger pre-configured by local ISPs.

Comments: If you need to convert paper documents to e-mail,
Fax Messenger is one of the best ways to do it. The unit requires
one two-prong AC plug and a small space near your fax machine.
The price is steep, but it does the job well.
