Corel WordPerfect Family Pack
By Lowell Conn, Cyberwalker
Media Syndicate
Corel's WordPerfect
Family Pack is as good a value as you are going to get in today's
discounted software environment.
This software bundle includes one of the best word processors
out there: WordPerfect 8, which, in my estimation, is a hair-trigger
better than top competitor Microsoft Word. You also get Corel
Quattro Pro 8 spreadsheet, which is better than top competitor
Microsoft Excel. Plus, you get Corel Print House Magic 4 and Corel
Photo House 3, both decent products to assist in designing business
promos, banners, business cards, and flyers.
To top it all off, Corel also includes Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
9, a nice addition, and Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1999,
which could keep the kids busy for hours.
The price on this baby is $79 US / $120 Canadian. Call me cheap
for even mentioning it, but you also get a $20 mail-in rebate.
If you are considering this software for your small business office, however, this might not be the route to go. Most businesses worth their mettle probably buy computers with this type of software bundled in. But Corel WordPerfect Family Pack is a delight for tight budgets and a pretty complete package.
If there is one real complaint about this software, it is that extras such as Compton's and Mavis Beacon have evolved into the ultimate throw-in programs. How many people have bought either program individually in recent years?
But if you are a small business owner operating out of your home who has not yet invested in real word processor and need a spreadsheet to do some home budgeting, Corel WordPerfect Family Pack might be for you. It doesn't hurt to have a desktop encyclopedia in the house, especially if you have school-age kids. It also makes sense for kids to learn to type. But unless you really know what you're doing, Quattro Pro won't provide much help with your business budget.
Reviewer's rating: 4 / 5
Comments: Standard software really, but a great price for some good variety.
