Corel WordPerfect
Law Office 2000

By Greg Stephens, Cyberwalker Media Syndicate

Corel WordPerfect Law Office 2000 is a comprehensive software package that allows a lawyer or an office assistant to manage almost all aspects of daily procedures.

This bundle of software takes care of almost everything: word processing, appointment reminders, docketing, contact management, conflict checks, Internet access, document creation, management and drafting. The package is extensive.

The package includes WordPerfect 9, the Quattro Pro 9 spreadsheet, Corel Presentations, Amicus Attorney IV Organizer Edition, Deal Proof automated proofreading, HotDocs 5.1 document assembly program, Black's Law Dictionary expanded spell checker, NexLaw 9 menu and tool-bar supplements, WestCiteLink citation management and Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice-powered word processing.

Installation is quick and easy; some applications are easier to use than others. WordPerfect 9 is as easily understood by new users as those who have previous experience with the program. Amicus Attorney, a case management system, requires a learning process and a commitment to building databases.

Further along the ease-of-use scale come HotDocs and Dragon. Both involve a significant time commitment to master. The payoff for learning how to use HotDocs to create a series of context-sensitive templates may seem remote, but could be worth the effort if you need to be able to produce a variety of customized documents quickly.
In the case of Dragon, you must teach the program your speech patterns, but once this has been accomplished, it is a wonderful tool.
Technical support from Corel was confusing. The Corel Web site didn't seem capable of addressing specific questions but a call to Corel resulted in being referred back to the Web site.

Amicus tech support, however, proved to be friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to do research to answer questions. Further, Amicus reps offered suggestions regarding other software (including Windows) that interact with Amicus software.

WordPerfect remains the workhorse of the office applications in this bundle. The Reveal Codes function of WordPerfect remains a very valuable feature that allows you to view and change hidden codes that otherwise can cause time consuming and frustrating formatting problems.
The new task bars handily allow you to proof read documents and check Blacks Legal Dictionary for words not found in traditional software dictionaries. You can even summarize a document and check for non-conforming phrases and defined terms.

WordPerfect's Make It Fit function is a big time saver. It allows you to reformat a document and put signatory lines exactly where you want them.

Software conflicts used to result often when running early versions of WordPerfect in a Microsoft Windows environment. No such problems were encountered with WordPerfect 9, which now saves in formats used by many other software programs.

Amicus Attorney is the organizational jewel in this bundle. With it, you can place a telephone call, click directly to a client's Web site, e-mail a client, prepare a fax cover sheet that automatically incorporates a client's contact information or view an attached document related to the client's file. All contacts associated with a file are arranged on the same page, so you don't have to try to remember the name of an associated party or search through a paper file for a phone number.

Amicus Attorney's To Do list will prompt you to make docket entries. Every morning, it will alert you if you have not posted your dockets or if you are running late on an assignment. Its Daily Report also provides task and appointment reminders, with a voice prompt for upcoming meetings and appointments.

A "tickler" system will remind you if you have not been in touch with a client or party within the period of time you specified, or if documents have not arrived on schedule. A timer clocks meetings and tasks that can be sent directly to the docket sheet module included on the program. There is much to like about this program.

You'll be hard pressed to find a dud in this bundle of applications. At $479 US ($720 Canadian), the package isn't cheap, but it can help you keep a law office running efficiently.

Reviewer's rating: 4 / 5

Comments: Corel WordPerfect Law Office 2000 is a terrific package for any law office. It helps you quickly produce customized documents and organize your client and client document information. In addition, it provides applications that keep you and your cases on track and includes a spell checker that will catch typos even in obscure legal terms. You'll wonder how you managed without it.

Minimum system requirements: Windows 95/98/NT 4.0, 166 MHz Pentium processor, 32 MB RAM (for Win 95) or 64 MB RAM (for Win 98 and NT 4.0), 210 MB of hard disk space (320 MB typical install), CD-ROM drive, VGA monitor, mouse or tablet. For Dragon, NaturallySpeaking, you'll need a faster 200 MHz Pentium processor, 48 MB RAM (for Win 95) or 64 MB RAM (for Win 98/NT 4.0), 279 MB of hard disk space (380 MB typical install) and a 16-bit sound card or built-in audio input quality equal to or greater than Creative Labs' Sound Blaster 16.
