Touchstone FastMove! 2000

By Lowell Conn Fong, Cyberwalker Media Syndicate

There is a fine line between a program's ease-of-use and obstructive simplicity. When programmers assume users are not information technology specialists, that's a good thing.

When this assumption leads to a program interface that becomes as obtrusive as it is simple, that can be a bad thing.

Touchstone's FastMove! 2000 falls somewhere in between. While it is one fine file management application with plenty of options and loads of versatility, it caters to an audience too novice to be in the market for file management software to begin with.

The program provides a very easy and intuitive interface for file management software. Not only do you get the traditional split screen, where files can be dragged from one side to the other, but the programmers added little arrows in the middle of the screen denoting the potential file management actions for each file. If files on either side of screen are exactly the same, the little arrow is replaced by an equal sign denoting no file movement is necessary. If an arrow points left, that means the file can be moved from the right screen to the left screen.

Easy and simple? Yes. Embarrassingly simple, perhaps. Where the arrows prove practical is in the handy synchronization function, which allows you to synchronize information from laptop to desktop. If you are a businessperson on the go and need to synchronize what you're taking with you and what you're leaving at the office, this utility's arrow system is a boon.

There is more. The program includes a utility called Clean & Zip that initiates backups and monitors files to ensure they have not been tampered with. The component also doubles as a zip management tool, a welcome innovation to any file management or disk backup utility. Modifying the user profile to filter which files to backup is very simple.

Operationally, FastMove! 2000 is terrific. The interface is where it hurts. Transfer a directory of files from one hard drive to another and a screen pops up essentially securing against incorrect file transfers. Nice for beginners, a slowdown for veterans. If the programmers had included an undo button -- very noticeably missing -- there would be less need for idiot-proofing.

FastMove! 2000 performs its functions admirably and has a lot of them. Its added component, Clean & Zip, alone seems a worthwhile addition to any utility library. Still, the simplicity is overwhelmed by real catering to newbies -- a crowd unlikely to buy file management software.

Reviewer's rating: 3.5 / 5

Comments: FastMove! 2000 is a good program buried beneath an overly-friendly user interface.
