IBM ThinkPad 600X
The price tags on IBM's ThinkPad series of notebook computers
are noteworthy.
At a brazen $3,100 US ($5,300 Canadian), the ThinkPad 600X 2645-9FU
is not likely to be the choice of laptop for a small business
that requires an occasional road trip.
However, if your notebook is your everyday computer and you
travel often enough that dependability, durability and lightweight
portability are priorities, consider the ThinkPad 600X. It is
well built, inside and out. An ultra-carbon casing makes this
a rugged and light machine.
Fully loaded, the ThinkPad 600X weighs a mere five pounds and
shows a slim 1.4-inch profile. A 13.3-inch active matrix display
is a comfortable size for long hours of viewing. A single slot
accommodates a variety of removable UltraSlimBay devices, such
as a DVD drive, Zip drive, or a second hard drive or battery.
Inside, the ThinkPad's no featherweight. Equipped with an Intel
Mobile Pentium III 650-megahertz processor and a tolerable 64
megabytes of RAM, this machine will handle just about any application
or several applications together, for multi-tasking ease. The
12-gigabyte hard drive provides more than enough room to install
applications and store your work.
This ThinkPad is also extremely quiet. A silent fan and near-silent
hard drive and CD-ROM drive mean that you'll be hard pressed
to irritate your neighboring passengers on a plane.
This ThinkPad comes with a full range of ports (serial, external
monitor, video out, sound in and out, external keyboard/mouse,
printer, USB and infrared) and 2 PCI card slots. There is a
separate slot for the modem card. Frequently used ports are
within easy reach along the sides of the notebook, while occasionally
used ports are located at the back of the laptop.
If you're upgrading memory or the hard drive, the underside
of the ThinkPad offers easy access for such improvements. The
user's reference manual is informative and helpful in explaining
the ThinkPad's workings.
The ThinkPad 600X 2645-9FU's keyboard is comfortable and practical.
It has a generously sized palm rest and large keys that provide
great physical response. The three-button TrackPoint (eraser
head) cursor system is easy to point and click and customize.
The absence of Windows specific keys will be bothersome to some
people, however, and the CTRL key has been displaced from its
customary position by IBM's Fn (function) key, which is used
to activate notebook management functions.
IBM's obliging and down-to-earth ThinkPad configuration utility
lets you control notebook settings and management functions
without the usual fear and uncertainty that you've set your
computer to self destruct. Swapping devices in the UltraSlimBay,
with the aid of the Configuration utility, is painless: no powering
down; no finger crossing.
Battery time isn't especially generous. It ranges from two hours
and 50 minutes at reduced performance (utilizing Intel's SpeedStep
technology to slow the processor speed and dim the LCD display
to conserve battery power) to a disappointing two hours at full
performance. Running the machine at reduced performance will
not cause any noticeable slowdown with most business applications.
The ThinkPad 600X 2645-9FU comes with a full range of power
management features.
The Hibernate feature is very handy, automatically saving all
of your current work to the hard drive, shutting down the machine
and restoring your applications and work to exactly where you
left off when you restart the laptop. If battery power is drained,
the Hibernate feature kicks in until you can recharge the battery
or plug in the laptop.
Given the price, it would be nice to see an additional 64 MB
of RAM and a longer battery life (or a second battery included).
But if you're looking for power and reliable performance in
a notebook, take a good look at the IBM ThinkPad 600X 2645-9FU.
This machine is a smooth operator.
Reviewer's rating: 4.5 / 5
Comments: The IBM ThinkPad 600X 2645-9FU is a robust
notebook, with integrated components, a first-rate keyboard
and excellent administrative features. It's a bit expensive
for small business users who need a notebook only for occasional
travel.
Specifications: Intel Mobile Pentium III 650 MHz processor,
64 MB RAM (expandable to 576 MB), 12-GB hard drive, 4 MB graphics
card, Sound Blaster compatible sound card, 56K mini PCI card
modem, Windows 2000 or Windows 98 SE, 24X CD-ROM drive, external
floppy drive and built-in microphone and stereo speakers.
