Once just useful communications devices, cellular phones have now wandered into the realm of fashion accessories. The Nokia 8860 works like a phone but looks like a cross between a fishing lure and a cigarette case.
Four inches long by 1.75 inches wide and three-quarters of an inch hick, this four-ounce gizmo is one of the tiniest mobile phones on the market. Flip it over and the chrome finish is as reflective as a mirror.
The 8860 features all the bells and beeps that you have come to expect from a Nokia, including an array of musical ring modes. It's ready to go out of the box and a charger is included.
It features a call log and five ring profiles (including a meeting and outdoor setting) that are customizable. This includes the ability to change the ring tune and enable or disable vibrate mode and ring volume settings.
When charged, it offers between 90 minutes and 40 minutes of talk time between charging. You'll get less time if you play one of four digital games built into the device's mini-liquid crystal screen.
Other features include a calendar, where you can add reminder notes and set an alarm for when an event is due. It even has a jack for a headset.
When the network provides the service, it can receive paging messages and supports sending and receiving of short text messages to and from other mobile phones.
The 8860 works with both cellular and digital cellular (PCS) networks and sports an internal antenna. The keyboard is designed for small fingers, so big people will have trouble with this device. A sliding cover conceals a hidden keypad that requires manicured nails or very small fingers to function. The panel also doubles as the mouthpiece.
This phone is also a little swanky for the budget-conscious small business person, though you can't beat the features.
Data junkies should be aware that the 8860 won't support the Wireless Access Protocol standard, which will bring Internet data to the mobile phone world. For those that are still keen, it's available on the AT&T Wireless in the U.S. and Rogers AT&T in Canada.
Reviewer's rating: 4.5 / 5
Comments: This phone has a lot of tightly-packed features, but it comes with a hefty price and does not support Wireless Access Protocol, so you'll have to toss it if you want Internet connectivity when it comes to wireless phones.
