It can be surprising how much space is
wasted on your hard drive by the remnants of uninstalled programs.
This is not uncommon if you frequently try out new programs
and delete them a few days later. Like almost everything when
it comes to computers, uninstalling programs are never as simple
as one click. An icon may uninstall, but are all the files and
configurations really cleaned out?
Sometimes the answer is yes but more often the answer is no.
Ontrack's EasyUninstall 2000 scans your system to find all the
files that should have been removed when you uninstalled a program.
On a test computer, a few mouse clicks and about 90 seconds
freed up 120 megabytes of valuable space. EasyUninstall also
has other ways of maximizing hard drive space. Best of all,
it acts a useful backup tool to archive programs in a single,
compact file or folder. But its primary function is fix the
mistakes made in previous uninstalls.
Old, unused files and configurations are located and deleted.
Most of the time, it's completely safe to delete these files
but there could be an element of risk, if you might need some
files later. Potentially risky files are flagged in case you
want to avoid their removal but a handy feature is the ability
to undo changes if you notice problems after deleting files.
An extremely valuable feature is the ability to uninstall a
program and store the files in a compressed archive instead
of deleting them. Files are pulled from their folders and configurations
are taken from the Windows registry but you don't lose the program.
This can be used to space some hard drive space in a real crunch
as compression can save around 50 percent of a file's size.
Another feature allows you to transport an application with
all its working files to another drive or even another computer.
It would be a difficult task without EasyUninstall 2000, because
files are scattered in many locations and it would be nearly
impossible to get each one. Unfortunately, just as a program's
uninstall can be imperfect, so is the execution of EasyUninstall
2000. One minor, annoying, drawback is the application's lengthy
loading time each instance you use it.
The initial scan of the hard drive can take 30 minutes or more.
After that, loading times are reduced but still noticeable.
Another problem is a tendency to crash just after EasyUninstall
2000 finishes a task. The job was luckily completed in every
case but having to restart so frequently is a major pain. But
if you can put up with a few headaches, EasyUninstall 2000 can
free up some hard drive space, speed up system performance and
serve as a backup for installed applications.
If it weren't for a few quirky problems, this would be a must-have
program. It's very affordable. But you have to be able to tolerate
frequent crashes and long load times.
Reviewer's rating: 3.5 / 5
Comments: Frequent crashes and long load times mar Ontrack
EasyUninstall 2000, which would otherwise be a very affordable
and useful program for clearing up the mess uninstalled programs
leave behind.
