Perfect
Disk 2000 is a disk defragmentation program that makes this
reviewer a little nervous. The software is easy to install and
easy to navigate -- but you should be wary of any program that
provides partition editing options. Left in the wrong hands,
or in the hands of a well-meaning but not-fully-computer-literate
individual, the ability to play with the computer's partitions
can be catastrophic.
Still, the program does its job. The test computer ran noticeably
faster after its fragmented hard drive was defragged. It also
incorporates a scheduling mechanism that provides automatic
defragmentation on a set schedule. While the feature is a welcome
addition, one wonders whether the entire process needs to be
automated. Most computers used to run standard applications
do not need frequent defragmentation.
Perfect Disk 2000 shows real flair in network mode. Connected
computers can be defragmented from one location, making Perfect
Disk 2000 a good tool for information technology specialists.
As mentioned, though, users not comfortable with partition configuration
should steer clear. One wrong step can destroy years of accumulated
data.
Where Perfect Disk 2000 flounders is in its defragmentation
speed. Initial speed is frustratingly slow. After the first
run, further defragmentations are quicker but still quite time
consuming. In its defence, the process is no faster than using
the defragmentation utility provided by Windows 95, but a progress
meter included with the Windows incarnation better gauges the
program's time.
After similar computers were defragmented with the alternative
programs, both had similar optimized results, an indicator Microsoft's
supplied utility might have the edge.
This reviewer hates to discourage users from purchasing a product.
The characteristics of any software or hardware should be carefully
laid alongside concluding information alluding to whether or
not it is a good buy. But it is hard to recognize Perfect Disk
2000 as a good buy for small business people who are not computer
experts.
The potential dangers of mishandling this program cannot be
understated. Do not, under any circumstances, play with the
options provided by Perfect Disk 2000 unless you are 100 percent
sure of each and every option's utility. You will destroy data
if you misuse this program.
Perfect Disk 2000 does provide good defragmentation. It does
so within an average time period. The program is best used by
a trained computer expert. Novices might be tempted to play
around with its settings. Don't. If you must change the settings,
be careful and, before doing so, read the manual -- twice. Good
people have been greatly inconvenienced by data loss attributable
to partition editing. Don't let it happen to you.
Reviewer's rating: 2.5 / 5
Comments: Perfect Disk 2000 defragments networks and
individual PCs. The depth of configuration options should scare
off the moderately knowledgeable users.
